DAN does not cover recreational activities unrelated to diving (with exceptions in the Guardian plan), pre-existing conditions, or accidents that occur outside the scope of a covered dive.

Why Drake Divers Is the Right Choice for Your First Dive at Caño Island

We strongly recommend it, and we ask all guests to carry valid dive accident insurance. DAN is the most widely accepted option. If you have equivalent coverage from another provider, we can review it before your trip. Our priority is that you are protected, not which provider you choose.

Usually not to the extent you need. Most travel insurance policies either exclude scuba diving entirely, or limit coverage to recreational depths with significant deductible thresholds. Critically, they rarely cover recompression chamber treatment or specialized dive medical evacuation. DAN insurance is designed to fill exactly those gaps.

Decompression sickness can occur even in shallow, introductory dives, though the risk is significantly lower. We recommend DAN insurance or equivalent coverage for all guests who enter the water with scuba equipment, regardless of experience level.

You will still receive emergency medical care. The difference is who pays. A full emergency response, including evacuation from Drake Bay, transfer to San José, and multiple recompression sessions, can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Without insurance, that bill is yours.

DAN USA emergency line: +1 (919) 684-9111 (24/7, collect calls accepted).
DAN Europe alarm center: +39 02 5731 8520 (24/7).

Save both numbers in your phone before you travel. In an emergency, your dive operator or hotel can also initiate the call on your behalf.

DAN USA's standard dive accident insurance is specifically for scuba diving. The Guardian plan extends coverage to other water sports. DAN Europe has specific freediving coverage options. Check your policy details before your trip if you plan to freedive or snorkel at depth.

Yes, but it is not recommended. Coverage typically activates after a short waiting period, and last-minute purchases may leave gaps. Buy your insurance at least 48 hours before your first dive. Ideally, sort it out when you book your trip.

DAN insurance works as secondary coverage: it picks up what your primary insurer does not pay. Even with comprehensive health insurance, most policies exclude or severely limit coverage for dive-specific conditions like DCS, barotrauma, and hyperbaric treatment. DAN covers the difference. They work together, not in competition.
