Drake Divers: 15 Years Diving Caño Island Waters

Drake Divers started with a simple premise: the people who know these waters best should be the ones guiding you through them. Caño Island Biological Reserve sits 20 kilometres off the coast of Drake Bay, across open Pacific water.

Over 15 years in this specific environment, our team has logged thousands of dives across every site in the reserve. We know where manta rays feed by season, which months bring hammerhead schools, and how currents shift conditions from one site to the next.

That knowledge comes from years in the water, in these conditions, in this part of Costa Rica. Not from a manual.

We are based in Agujitas, 5 minutes from the beach. We depart directly from Drake Bay. You step onto the boat and go.

What Sets Us Apart

👥
Maximum 6 Divers Per Guide
Every dive, every time. Small groups mean direct supervision, better wildlife encounters, and a quieter experience underwater, not just a policy on paper.
🏅
PADI Dive Resort
Not every operator in Drake Bay holds PADI Dive Resort certification. It requires verified standards in instructor qualifications, equipment and safety protocols.
🌿
Local Guides, Not Visiting Instructors
Our team lives in Drake Bay year-round and dives Caño Island multiple times a week. When conditions shift, they know it before anyone else does.
🔧
SCUBAPRO Equipment Only
All tanks, regulators, BCDs and wetsuits are SCUBAPRO brand, inspected and maintained to manufacturer standards. No mixed fleet of ageing gear from different suppliers.
🏛️
ICT-Certified Operation
Drake Divers holds certification from Costa Rica's Instituto Costarricense de Turismo, required to legally run tours inside Caño Island Biological Reserve and Corcovado.
⏱️
15+ Years in These Waters
Over 1,000 dives per year at the same sites. We know where manta rays feed by season, where hammerhead schools gather, and which sites perform best on any given day.
🚤
Direct Departure from Drake Bay
We leave from Drake Bay, not from Sierpe. That's 40 minutes to Caño Island, not two hours. No transfers, no logistics chain, no wasted morning.
🗣️
Fully Bilingual Team
Every guide and instructor communicates in both English and Spanish. Briefings, safety instructions and dive debriefs in whichever language you prefer.

Drake Bay: Where We Live and Work

Drake Bay sits on the northern edge of the Osa Peninsula – one of the most remote accessible areas of Costa Rica. No paved road connects it to the highway system. You arrive by small aircraft from San José or by boat from Sierpe.

The Osa Peninsula contains 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity in 0.001% of its land area. Caño Island has been a biological reserve since 1978. Corcovado National Park since 1975. That protection is why the marine and terrestrial life here is what it is.

Drake Divers operates from Agujitas, a 5-minute walk from the beach. We handle all equipment preparation and post-dive washing. You show up at the boat.

Why Drake Divers Is the Right Choice for Your First Dive at Caño Island

In our Google reviews, we are one of the highest-rated dive centers in Costa Rica.
Our community highlights our organization, professionalism and the personal touch that makes us unique connection to this corner of Costa Rica:  that’s what makes Drake Divers different.

Yes. Drake Divers holds PADI Dive Resort certification. All instructors and divemasters are PADI-certified, and we offer PADI courses from Open Water Diver through Divemaster. Not every operator in Drake Bay holds this status — it requires meeting verified standards in instructor qualifications, equipment and safety protocols.

We maintain a maximum ratio of 6 divers per guide on all dive trips. This applies to both guided dives for certified divers and Discover Scuba experiences — no exceptions. Smaller groups mean more direct supervision and better encounters with marine life.

Yes. Our entire team is fully bilingual in Spanish and English. All briefings, safety instructions and dive debriefs are available in both languages. No language barrier at any point of your experience.

Drake Divers is certified by the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT). This certification is required to legally operate tours inside protected areas of Costa Rica, including Caño Island Biological Reserve and Corcovado National Park.

We are based in Agujitas, the main village of Drake Bay, on the Osa Peninsula. Our dive center is a short walk from the beach. We depart directly from Drake Bay — no transfers from Sierpe, no wasted morning. Caño Island is 40 minutes away by boat.

None, for Discover Scuba Diving — no prior experience required. For guided dives at the reef sites, a valid Open Water certification or equivalent is needed. We run experiences for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced divers looking for multiple tanks.

Caño Island is diveable year-round. The dry season (December–April) brings calmer seas and stronger visibility. The green season (May–November) brings humpback whale migrations, manta ray aggregations and higher marine activity overall. Both seasons produce exceptional dives.

Drake Bay is accessible by small aircraft from San José (30 min to Palmar Sur or Drake airstrip) or by boat from Sierpe (1.5 hours down the Río Sierpe). Once in Agujitas, our dive center is a short walk from the main beach. We can help with logistics if needed — just ask when you book.
