Drake Divers is a PADI-certified dive center based in Agujitas, Drake Bay. We run daily scuba diving and snorkeling trips to Caño Island Biological Reserve, PADI certification courses, and guided tours into Corcovado National Park. Our team is local and has been diving these specific waters for over 15 years.
4,5 / 5 on Google & Tripadvisor
Drake Divers started with a simple premise: the people who know these waters best should be the ones guiding you through them. Caño Island Biological Reserve sits 20 kilometres off the coast of Drake Bay, across open Pacific water.
Over 15 years in this specific environment, our team has logged thousands of dives across every site in the reserve. We know where manta rays feed by season, which months bring hammerhead schools, and how currents shift conditions from one site to the next.
That knowledge comes from years in the water, in these conditions, in this part of Costa Rica. Not from a manual.
We are based in Agujitas, 5 minutes from the beach. We depart directly from Drake Bay. You step onto the boat and go.
Everything you need for a full day of diving, based in Agujitas. Our dive centre, boat and training pool are set up so your day runs without friction from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave the water.
Our base in Agujitas is where briefings, gear checks and equipment fitting happen before every trip. Open every day, a five-minute walk from the main beach. We handle the logistics so you focus on the dive.
We operate a dedicated dive boat with full tank storage and gear space for your group. We leave directly from Drake Bay, no transfers needed. Caño Island is 40 minutes across open Pacific water from shore.
All Discover Scuba and Open Water course sessions start in the pool. Confined water training gives you time to practice gear use, buoyancy and core skills in a safe environment before your first ocean dive.
Drake Bay sits on the northern edge of the Osa Peninsula – one of the most remote accessible areas of Costa Rica. No paved road connects it to the highway system. You arrive by small aircraft from San José or by boat from Sierpe.
The Osa Peninsula contains 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity in 0.001% of its land area. Caño Island has been a biological reserve since 1978. Corcovado National Park since 1975. That protection is why the marine and terrestrial life here is what it is.
Drake Divers operates from Agujitas, a 5-minute walk from the beach. We handle all equipment preparation and post-dive washing. You show up at the boat.
In our Google reviews, we are one of the highest-rated dive centers in Costa Rica.
Our community highlights our organization, professionalism and the personal touch that makes us unique connection to this corner of Costa Rica: that’s what makes Drake Divers different.
GOOD Based on 205 reviews Posted on Travesias Y CaminosTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Gracias a todo el equipo que lo hace tan bienPosted on antoine jeanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Matériel à revoir surtout au prix des plongées !Posted on Julio Castro PardoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Posted on Ray L.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If you do the San Pedrillo tour at Corcovado (and I highly recommend it), please ask for Sandro. He is an AMAZING guide with an encyclopedic knowledge of the national park. As a boy he grew up close to Corcovado and he knows how to look and where to look so that you don't miss anything. While you should keep your expectations low so as to not be disappointed, my wife and i were fortunate that Sandro was able to guide us to see multiple tapirs (5 i think to include a mama and baby but they ask looked alike to me), 3 of the 4 native monkey species (howler, spider, & capuchin), macaws, wild turkeys, vultures, a boa constrictor, leaf cutter ants, golden orb spiders, an agouti, several crocodiles, snook (fish), jesus christ lizards, and even a sloth ?! Sandro's greatest strength is that, because he grew up with the jungle, he could stop and tell us several facts about the different trees, plants, and animals and related that to how ancient cultures/ natives used them. He educated us and inspired us along the tour. He was super helpful in letting us use his telescope to take pictures with our cell phones. (We got some amazing photos!) Sandro was super knowledgeable, patient, kind, friendly and cared about us having the greatest day that we could have at the park. He was very in touch with nature and protecting all of her beauty... he truly had a sense and appreciation and love for Costa Rican nature. He told about the history of the park and the practical and medicinal uses of several plants (to include Ibuprofen and root beer from sasparilla). We had a tasty lunch and even got to cool off in the water after visiting the waterfall. The only reason I am giving Sandro 5 star rating is because the scale does not go higher! I promise you will have an incredible trek with Sandro as your guide! Pura Vida!Posted on Helen FletcherTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We just had 2 great days diving with Drake Divers. My son did his PADI open water and I did 4 dives. Zobe and Angello were both brilliant guides and Eric and Sergio (I think!) were fantastic teachers for my son. The visibility was mixed, but we saw loads - turtles, white tips, numerous morays and fabulous shoals of fish. The dive masters kept an eye on everyone with regular checks for air. The boat captain and the whole crew were helpful - the captain even pointed out and stopped for 2 humpbacks, which was magical. Thanks so much to all of you for answering my many questions when I booked, picking us up from our hotel and for giving my son the most fantastic first experience of diving!!Posted on Telma RodriguezTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excelente experiencia, totalmente recomendable y Ángelo, el instructor un genio, volveremos!!!Posted on Irene Naverán.RTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Buen trabajo chicos! Gracias.Posted on Christina HuberTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Posted on Marcela GCTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Perfect experience with a very professional team and equipment.
Yes. Drake Divers holds PADI Dive Resort certification. All instructors and divemasters are PADI-certified, and we offer PADI courses from Open Water Diver through Divemaster. Not every operator in Drake Bay holds this status — it requires meeting verified standards in instructor qualifications, equipment and safety protocols.
We maintain a maximum ratio of 6 divers per guide on all dive trips. This applies to both guided dives for certified divers and Discover Scuba experiences — no exceptions. Smaller groups mean more direct supervision and better encounters with marine life.
Yes. Our entire team is fully bilingual in Spanish and English. All briefings, safety instructions and dive debriefs are available in both languages. No language barrier at any point of your experience.
Drake Divers is certified by the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT). This certification is required to legally operate tours inside protected areas of Costa Rica, including Caño Island Biological Reserve and Corcovado National Park.
We are based in Agujitas, the main village of Drake Bay, on the Osa Peninsula. Our dive center is a short walk from the beach. We depart directly from Drake Bay — no transfers from Sierpe, no wasted morning. Caño Island is 40 minutes away by boat.
None, for Discover Scuba Diving — no prior experience required. For guided dives at the reef sites, a valid Open Water certification or equivalent is needed. We run experiences for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced divers looking for multiple tanks.
Caño Island is diveable year-round. The dry season (December–April) brings calmer seas and stronger visibility. The green season (May–November) brings humpback whale migrations, manta ray aggregations and higher marine activity overall. Both seasons produce exceptional dives.
Drake Bay is accessible by small aircraft from San José (30 min to Palmar Sur or Drake airstrip) or by boat from Sierpe (1.5 hours down the Río Sierpe). Once in Agujitas, our dive center is a short walk from the main beach. We can help with logistics if needed — just ask when you book.
